THE ARAHURA ROAD BOARD.

In the County Council yesterday.?Mr R. J. Seddon, a? reported in the 'West Coast Times, moved “ That this Council now confirm the resolution adopted at special meeting held on the 9th day of May, 1878, declaring the Road Board of the Arahura Road District to be dissolved on and from this date, and .the said road district to be merged in the County of Westland.” 6 Mr M’Whirter seconded the resolution. The Chairman said when they that the Board had been squandering money they ought to refrain from taking over the Board. Beside* no reply has been received to a letter sent to the Clerk of the Board thirty days ago. Mr Hirtcr wished to see a statement of liabilities befoie the Board was taken ov>.-r. He would also like to see tho statements of the Chairman and Clerk of the Arahma Road Board verified. Without a, verification he would not take the statement of those persons. The Board had actually voted ten ' mouths’ salary to the clerk at his present rate of pay, .£2O per month. Mr Dale moved an amendment that the motion be postponed till the 10th July, and that steps be taken to obtain particulars of the liabilities of the Board. ‘ Mr Ba iks seconded. Mr beddou would withdraw his motion in favour of the amendment. He wished every one to know the doings of the clique which ruled ttie Arahura Road Board. He knew they were bad, but he could not have believed that the Board could vote the sum of £2OO to the clerk of the Board, Mr Byrne, who got a month’s notice. A. more outrageous job was never perpetrated. At one tune Byrne got 10s per week, then £2 per week, but latterly he had got £5 a week for doing nothing, and now he was to have compensation. No Court of law would force the Council to pay such a liability as that. He did not believe a bonus could be voted’ to an officer. The amendment was carried.
