A public meeting is to be held in the Theatre Royal this evening, at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of taking "into consideration the desirability of petitioning His Excellency the Governor to cancel the Education Reserve within the Borough, and to throw the land open for sale." It may be stated at the close of the meeting it is the intention of his Worship the Mayor to bring forward for discussion the question of the desirableness of forming a prospecting association in Kumara. The attention of the authorities is : directed to a very dangerous hole in the road opposite Rugg's Hotel. Being small and deep, predestrians will, after dark, run a risk of arriving home with a broken leg. The liberality of the people of this district in a really deserving case is thoroughly exemplified by reference to. our advertising columns, in which appears the balance-sheet of the treasurer, Mr Matthew Davidson, shewing that the public have subscribed the very handsome sum of £lls 12s dd for the purpose of sending Mr John Dickson, a well known resident of the Greenstone, to the Eye Infirmary in Melbnorne, he unfortunately having temporarily lost the use of his sight. The replies received to the County Chairman's circular, inviting the Councils to assembly in conference on the 21st July, relative to improvements in the County system and the amendment of the Counties Act, are nearly in every instance of a favorable character, and the whole of the Councils, except that of the Grey, have, the West Coast Times states, decided to send delegates to it. The Provincial Buildings in Wellington: have been secured for the conference. At the meeting of the Westland County Council, to be held to-morrow, Mr Seddon will move—" That it is the intention of this Council on Wednesday, the 10th day of July, 1878, to make a general rate of one shilling in the £ on the rateable vaiue of all property within the County as entered in the rate-book, for the period beginning Ist April, 1878, and ending 31st March, 1879, to be due and payable in one sam on the 14th July, 1878.''' The following motion, ef which notice has been given, will be considered tomorrow by the County Concil :—" That this Council now confirm the resolution adopted at special meeting held on the 9th day of May, 1878, declaring the Road Board of the Arahura Road District to be dissolved on.and from this date, and the said road district to be merged in the County of Westland." The West Coast Times concludes a severe article dealing with Mr Fitz Gerald's candidature for tlie vacant Hokitika seat,' as follows ;—" Steps ought to be taken by those who have the welfare of the district at heart to induce the other candidates, save one, to resign. Let the one so chosen, whoever he may be, fight out the battle with Mr Fitz Gerald and there would be no fear of the result. We care not whether Mr Button, Mr George, or Mr Anyoneelse be selected, so long as the candidate'3 reputation is untarnished, and his abilities fair. The return of Mr FitzGerald for this district would be a deplorable calamity." The Hinemoa recently brought down from Auckland to Wellington new copper coins, to the value of £SOO, for the banks, the bulk nearly filling one of the cabins Tenders for the erection of a butcher's shop and dwelling, at Dillman's Town, close this evening, at Messrs Campbell and Kettles. Wood and party notify in another column that they require a supply of props and caps. For miraculous cures by the use of Eucalypti Extract, read fourth page.— [Abvt.] . Burns says, with gloomy grandeur, " There is a foggy atmosphere native to my soul m the hour of care, which makes the dreary objects seem larger than life," He who suffers thus cannot be relieved by any appliances save those that touch the heart—the homelier the more sanative—and none so sure as a wife's affection. True, 0 poet, but he who suffers the rack- j ing pains of rheumatism, sciatica, or lum- ' bago, should use, combined with your ; prescription, " Ghollah's Great Indian i Cures," the wonder of the nineteenth i century. Testimonials may be seen in ! another column, and Medicines may be j procured at all Chemists.—[Advt.]
