We are authorised to state that His Worship the Mayor will put the names of persons entitled to a vote on the roll, upon making application to him. Some of our contemporaries having mentioned that a member of the staff of the Kuraara Times has instituted proceedings against Father Hennebery, and as some misapprehension may exist on the subject, we may state that it is a purely personal matter, the gentleman referred to considering, rightly or wrongly, that his personal reputation has been attacked. With the proposed action the conductors of the Kumara Times as such have no concern. It is satisfactory to see that the Borough Council is taking active measures to secure the covering in of the Government Water-race along Fourth street. It is in a highly dangerous state, and His Worship the Mayor, in bringing the matter under the notice of the Council last night, mentioned an instance in which a child had nearly lost its life by falling in and being carried away, Mr D. W. Virtue contributes a letter to the West Coast Times on the Hennebery ■ controversy. Alluding to the disciplinary decreas of Trent relating to mar-

riages between Roman Catholics and Protestants, he says:—“There is nothing, unless it be motives of mere policy, to prevent the Pope from giving them force when he pleases. If, mid when, that is done, every marriage thereafter concluded outside of his Church will, according to his own words, |be ‘ a filthy concumbinage.’ .Sir, it is time, high time, to smite the ground against such gross libel and untruth. I have sympathy for our amiable friend, .Father Martin, whose incoherent drivel has only been received from the fountain head ; but I trust he will not again permit himself to be made the channel for the nauseous and offensive overflow.”

The usual monthly meeting of the Masonic Lodge takes place this evening.

Messrs Learmonth and Co. advertise other: three sales by auction to take place next Monday. It will not be forgotten that the Concert in aid of the funds of the English Church will take place this evening in the Theatre Royal. Already a large number of tickets have been sold, and' there is every prospect of a full house attending to listen to the performance of one of the finest programmes that has ever been presented in Kumara.

The cricket match between Kumara and Greymouth was commenced this afternoon, the weather not being particularly favourable. Kumara won the toss, and sent Greymouth to the wickets, all of whom were disposed of for 54. At the time of going to press, Kumara men were all out for 55 runs. The following are the names of the local team D’Alton, Blake, Moss, Lowther, T. Jones, Kennedy, Barnett, R. Bell, W. Bell, Marks, Heaphy. Stumps will be drawn at 6.30 p.m. The annual inspection of the Kumara Contingent of the First Westland Rifles will be held to-morrow evening, at the Public, Hall, at which every enrolled volunteer is ordered to., attend, unless sick, or on leave, and even in that .case, the arms . and 'accoutrements belonging I to those members so absent will have to be forwarded, as under the Volunteer Act/ 1 at this inspection the Officer-Commanding the District has power to inflict a heavy, fine on any volunteer mdt’complying with these..orders^ The" focallty of the reef discovered by Lawrie and party recently, is, says the West Coast Times, between the Kanieri Lake and the right hand branch of the Kanieri river, about two miles from Butcher’s Gully where the prospectors were camped. They have been prospecting over -the coal lease of 2000 acres granted some two years ago, and were satisfied that other minerals besides coal would be • found, and clearly their anticipations have been proved correct. The reef runs through . a hill about nine hundred feet above the level of Hokitika, and is bared about ten’feet thick on the prospectors claim.. The line known as • M‘Gregor’s! The cOulpaiiy are going to get out about 30cwt of stone and bring it down to Haworth’s saw mills/ where it will be placed under ; a battery' and crushed. There is no gold visible in the ■ stone, but all that has been tested has yielded gold. The great Hochstetter water-race seems to be in a bad way. The Grey River Argus says of itThe Government 'spent an enormous sum of money for the purpose of supplying water-power for the i working of ground that otherwise could | uot be \ised at all, and yet they never took thought as to the possible infringement of the privileges of those miners who held prior water-rights. It is true that | the Government was prepared to take up I and pay for any prior rights to head-water, but it never, it appears, has occurred to the clouded intellects of the department, that there might possibly be contingent ! rights that would have to be satisfied. And now, as things stand, the Hochstetter race is practically of ho use whatever. It is to very little purpose if, having been I supplied with a plentiful quantity of I water, you cannot use it without damage ! to others, and the consequent claim for : injury, and unless the Government at once , step in and by some means satisfy the | holders of rights along the creek, it would be as well to close the race at once.
