Wellington, February 27. In the Supreme Court to-day, judgment was given in the case Henderson v. the Queen. The .case arose out of a contract at Westport. The contractor tendered according t© specifications, but found that, as part of the section was through a swamp, there was great subsidence, which necessitated a verymuch greater quantity of earth filling than bad been allowed for (about £SOOO worth), hence the claim. Judgment was given for the Crown, with costs, as agreed.

Auckland, February 27. A gardener, named John Nairn, was found with the left side of his throat cut, and lying in a pool of blood. Nairn says a strange man called on Sunday,and demanded money from him, which he refused. The stranger seized a razor and inflicted the wounds, and stole 6s. The wounds ar-e not dangerous. Nairn was dismissed from his ■employment lately for intemperance, and his story is not believed, as he was seen out on Monday.

The City Council to-day referred the charges of incompetency against Anderson, the City Engineer, to two engineers.
