The House met to-day at 2.30,

Mr Fox directed the attention of the Minister of Justice to certain recent decisions of the Resident Magistrate's at Christchurch.

Mr Bowen promised to make enquiries.

Mr M'Lean promised Mr Williams to call for tenders for an overland mail service between Wangarie, Kawakawa and Ohaewai, and if the cost was reasonable the service would be established.

Mr Reid, replying to Mr Wakefield, it was intended that where the people in Canterbury had been Settled on reserves not otherwise Specially appro? priated, a survey of such reserves would be made, and allow the occupants to purchase on terms. Also, to lay out a township on the railway reserves. The difficulty in both cases was to obtain surveyors. In Committee on the Education Bill, clause 50 was further amended; 51 and 52 were postponed; clause 53 passed on division by 38 to 10.

September 15. After the adjournment the Education Bill was considered in Committee. Clauses 51 and 52 were postponed. In clause 53 the words requiring the consent of the Minister to making district high schools were retained, on a division by 38 to 10. An amendment in clause 54, to make fees of district high schools cover the coßt of the education given was lost on a division by 43 to 2. The word five was altered to ten in clause 58. The remaining clauses to 75 were passed. An amendment was moved to omit the words relating .to capitation tax in clause 76, but after a long discussion, it was rejected by 38 to 24. Clauses 77 and 78 were passed, after which progress was reported.

The Census Bill passed its remaining stages unaltered.

The Friendly Societiesßill was partly considered in Committee. The House rose at 1.40.
