London, August 9. In published letters, Mr Bright repudiates the view regarding protection, attributed to him by Sir C. G. Duffy. He does not recollect any conversation on the subject. He says that. if a Government voted a subsidy for an important steamboat enterprise, or fostered some new culture, as grapes or tea, for example, no sound principle would be violated. Mr Bright, however, condemns, an oppressive customs tariff for protection purposes, as an injurious policy, which Victoria will ultimately find to be the case. Sydney, August 10.
