It is stated that 18,000 people in all parts of the Colony have signed the petition in favor of Fox’s Local Option Bill. William Dixon, a colored man, was knocked down on the railway line near Mosgiel, and waa seriously injured. It is stated that a large number of j those who settled along the Port Chalunera line are desirous of selling their
properties, in consequence of the iu« creased railway rates. A petition is now in circulation in favor of the Strath-Taieri railway line. It states that the line will open up 40,000 acres of Crown lands, comparatively level and fit for the plough; also that the petitioners are satisfied that it will pay working expenses immediately on completion. Nelson, August 9, 5.25 p.m. The Lady Barkley has returned after a fruitless search for the missing boats in the neighborhood of Croixelles. The Naval Brigade go out in their boats tonight in search. August 10. No tidings have yet been received of the missing boats. The Lady went out again last night, and the Naval Brigade’s boat, with a crew |of , twenty, including the second mate and one of the crew of the Queen Bee. The latter will go round Durville’s • Island, and probably meet the‘Mana-’ ; watu. Messrs Sharp and Pickering report the sale of the vessel and cargo • ! for £740. Messrs N. Edwards and Co., '' agents for the ship, protested against r <f the sale, on the ground that the vessel had not been abandoned, and the insurance office had no right to interfere.
