The Kumara Times. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1877.
To-morrow is the day appointed for the nominations for Mayor and Councillors of the first Borough Council of of Kumara. As will have been seen by our advertising columns, Mr R. J, Seddon is a can didate for the Mayoralty.! Up to noon to-day it appeared to be extremely probable that he would have a walk-over. Since noon, however, Mr Dungan has, in compliance with the request of a large number of the burgesses, consented to allow himself to be nominated, and there is little doubt tWt as the supporters of the respective candidates will work hard in their behalf, there will be a close -contest. Strong efforts were made to induce Mrl J, Gibson to come forward, but that 1 gentleman has steadily refused. For
the office of Councillor, rumour names a good number of citizens as likely to be nominated. Among these are Messrs Seddon and Dungan, in case they fail in the Mayoral election, and Messrs Gaming, Hanna, Keenan, George, H. Cullen, Roulston, Anchor, Anderson, M'Fetrich, Bulstrode, Rugg, Hannan, Drummond, o‘Hara, and Pearn. With regard to the election about to take place, it may be mentioned that the 52nd clause of the Municipalities Act requires candidates for the office of Mayor to deposit £lO. If a candidate dees not poll one-eight of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate the former’s deposit shall be paid into the County Fund. The 56th clause declares that the Mayor may be appointed J.P. but is to hold that appointment only during his term of office. The 58 th clause permits a salary to be voted to the Mayor. The 59th clause declares that the councillors shall number nine, exclusive of the Mayor who is, ex-officio, a Councillor. Possessors of rateable property to the valne of £25 and more are eligible as councillors. Nomination papers can be obtained at the office of the Kumaba Times. The Returning Officer will be at the Court House from 10 to 12 tomorrow (Saturday) to receive nominations. The cemetery committee met last night at the Brian Boru Hotel; present Messrs Dungan (chair), George, O’Hagan, Anchor, and Hannan. Messrs Hannan and Dungan reported that they had visited the site of the cemetery, and found it suitable both in position and distance from town. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Chairman of the Waste Lands Board and to the Chairman of the County Council, strongly recommending that after the cemetery has been laid off, it be invested in trustees, as early as possible. The committee then adjourned. Two new candidates for public favour will make their debut, at the Theatre Royal Kumara on Saturday evening next, namely, Mr, Farrell, “ the great Dutch comedian,” and Mr Stokes, “ the clipper dancing boy.” There will also be a magic lantern entertainment (with new comic scenes and the Life of Robinson Crusoe,) andßoxand Cox. The prizes will be given away under a new system by which the management guarantee to give satisfaction.
