THE OLD SETTLERS.
(to the editor.) Sir,—As we plod along in our daily t business and work we often enme in contact with some of the original inhabitants of the Kawhia district. I, of course, want it to he clearly understood that I mean those first established about here. What do we find on a thorough analysis ? They have on and all had chances of the best that will not recur. There were always opportunities and by this time several Industries should have been established. But such is not tbe case. What about our coal, lime, and perhaps cement deposits? Burely something could be done in that direction. Now then ye men from the South with such a lot of push, get to work and show the old inhabitants what should have been done many years. It is astonishing to see tons of coal coming to Kawhia by steamer when that article is so plentiful almost at our back doors. Let someone take *hi matter up and change things—instead Joi Kawhia Living to depend on other places for coal let other places have to get its fuel fromjbere. This district should be one of New Zealand’s great coal ports.’—Yours, etc., r.wn
