COUNTY COUNCIL MATTERS.

x (to the editor.) Sir,—1 notice by the Kawhia Settler full reports of the meetings of the Kawhia County Council, etc,, but I must say as a settler, I think most of the work tha< is done by tbe Council is done in the Council office. As far as getting anything done on tbe roads it seems out of the question. In my own part of the district, Awaroa, there are four or five big trees flying over the main road, and have been there for months. Every one who uses the road has to scramble over them the best way they can, and perhaps break their horse's leg, or their own in the attempt. Our Council representative seems to take no notice, and is satisfied to scramble with tbe rest. Wake up, Awaroa. We are one of tbe oldest settled districts round tbe harbour and by far the most backward—very little reading, one launch pnd one mail a week—while every other part of the harbour have launches eyery day and two mails a week. There is a branch of the Farmers Union here ; but I am afraiu it is dead. If not let it make a move, and keep Aworoa abreast of the other places—if it does nob, this district will be where the cow’u tail is. I am speaking from experience in comparing the districts, as I have travelled through all the different ridings in the Kawhia County, and lean honestly pay Awaroa is tbe most backward. This should not be tbe case, as there is some of tbe finest land in the County in tbe Awaroa pud Kauri rid ings. What we want ii live men to represent 11s. Tbe Kauri riding has never bad a representative on tbe Council. I wouL- like to know how much money tbe Council has spent in the Kauri and Awaroa ridings. Very little I think. The ratepayers are paying an engineer, clerk, councillors’ expenses, etc., for what ? As far as I can see, not for making roads.—Yours A SETTLER.
