MRW. R. MORRIS APPOINTED ASBIS f A NT- SECRETaR V, Mr W. R. Morris, (father of Mr C, R. Morris, of Kawaroa,)’Controller of Money Orders au i Savings Banks and Accountant, has been appointed Assistant-Secret try to the post and Telegraph Department, vice MrD. Robertson, now Secretary to the department. Mr Morris has nearly’ thirty-three yens in the New Zealand public service to his credit. Born at Dublin iu 1853, he was educated at the Bective Colleg , and after his school days entered the Imperial Public Service in the accountant’s branch of the Dublin General Bost Office, lie came out to tho colony in 1874, arriving at Lyttelton in September of that in tho ship Caris brook Castle, and he at ones ♦ ntered the Civil Service a* a clerk in the Money Order Department. Five yeais later be was pre mttk.d to the position of money-order clerk at Wellington, aud in 1872 was tran’ferrjd to Christchurch in the i«ame positio , only CO be retransferred to Wellington in two yearn, filling the same office until 1891. when he became senior clerk in the accountmt’s branch. From that to the po ition of Assistant Coiitr Iler of Money O:d rs and cavings Baeks was but a step ; the~> on the retirement of Mr Geerge Gray at the end of last year he became Controller and Accountant. In the m -antime, both Mr T. Rose Assistant-Secretory, ami Mr William Gray. Secretary, died, and changes were rapidly made Mr D. Robertson, chief clerk, became Assistant Secret ou Mr Rose’s demise, and was appointed to succeed Mr Gray as Secretary tn the lat torts death. Thia lefs the vacancy that has now been filled by the appointment of Mr Morris, who 1b highly popular and respected throughout the service. Mr Morris takes a great interest in volunteering, and was largely instrumental in the formation of that creditable corps, the Post and Telegraph Rifles, of which he is the captain. He in a keen sportsman with rod and guu and in former yean was a frequent contributor co the press on sport in its v ious ph: ses.—N. Z. Times.
