KINOHAKU BRANCH. A meeting was held on the 21st inst. to consider several matters relevant to the progress of this district. A long discussion took place as to the merits and dismerits of the Council acting as a Harbour Board, Mr Stanley addressing tbe meeting at some length, Mr Shaw (the chairman) answering. After a long discussion by several speakers it was decided that the Council accept the Harbour Board duties until steps could be taken to have a legally constituted Harbour Board formed. Dissatisfaction was expressed at postal matters generally, and also at several pieces of land laid off for senio or other reserves, proving totally unfit for same.—The Secretary was instructed to write asking the Commissioner of Crown Lands to throw them open for selection.
Tbe branchs delegate’s (Mr Hay, lock) report from the Provincial Council was read and received, and also a lengthy report from the two delegates appointed to investigate the roadways between Kinohaku and the railway, Mr Burd (Government Road Engineer) having advocated tbe long way round to Te Kuiti. The delegates were Messrs Haylock and J. P. Wright. After minutely describing tbe two roads, the report proceeds:—“ln perusing the report the most striking feature is tbe incomprehensibility of the position taken by Mr Burd in tenaciously hanging to an impossible roadway so far as this district was concerned, and persistently advocating its construction in preference to the much shorter, much easier made, and less costly mentioned roadway—the Mangapohue —and in conclusion we emphatically deny the oft repeated statements that the No 1 road is best calculated to serve the interests of these districts, and we express a hope, now the facts have been elucidated, that tbe inexplicable opposition shown by Mr Burd to the No. 2 road will be removed, and with your assistance have tbe No. 2 road made immediately available for traffic,”
A large number of members (26) banded in their names besides 10 also from tbe eub-branch at Awaroa.
It was also proposed to proceed with an agitaHon for a wharf at Lemon Point.
