The Harbour Board.

At the meeting of ratepayers of the Kawhia Biding on (Tuesday evening, Mr Mason brought forward the question of ths Harbor* Board, and suggested that something should be done in tbe way of giving the Council an idea of what Kawhia desired. Cr Jonathan said that when the matter was first discussed at tne Council table none of the members had given tbe subect a great amount of .thought. It was then decided to get tbe Marine Department to vest the harbour in the Council, and being a member of that body he would back the suggestion up. This meeting might pass a resolution, which would help the Council. Since the last meeting of the local body there had '.•' n n an important development—the doJsion of the Union S.S. Go. to es tablish another steamer service. It was now imperative that something should be done at once. Mr J. K. Newton said that the gentlemen who were in Kawhia making enquiries and sounding the harbour had stated that tbe wharf must be extended and the shed accommodation increased. The depth of water at tbe wharf now would not allow the Corrina to lie at it. Cr Jonathan said that be had also been informed exactly as Mr Newton said would have to be done, and also dolphins erected He did not. think the endowments could be handled by the Council. Mr Mason : Until the|wharf is extended live stock cannot be loaded. Mr Turrell : The Gout oil should not have control of the harbour. Mr Mason : No. There should be a properly constituted Harbour Board.

The matter was eventually dealt with by the following motion, which was moved by Mr Mason and seconded by Mr Turrell :—“ Seeing tbe urgent necessity of extensive mprovements to the wharf owing to larger steamers visiting the port, the Council be asked to urge tbe formation of a properly constituted Board.— Carried,
