IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. In response to an advertisement in last issue about a dozen ratepayers attended a meeting in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening last to dhctiss the advisability of raising a loan to effect improvements to the town. Dr. 0. Campbell Jenkins was voted to the chair.
The Chairman, in introducing the m alter, said that whon the loans were first; mooted Or Jonathan decided to leave all the money to the outride ridings, but seeing that the sum of £1750 w»s going begging-, that srentleman now thought some of tha money should be utilised for improving the town, but at the expense of the townspeople. The rate, he thought, would ba struck upon the unimproved value, which wo ild havo tbe effect of forcing the absentees to pay as much as these who were occupying their sections, which would have a giod effect on the absentees.
Cr Jonathan remarked that when the question of loans was raised he put in an application for £5OO for the Kiwbia Riding, but withdrew, though he was uncertain as to whether he was then doing the riding justice by so doing. He favoured spending every penny possible in the country, as that, no doubt, would benefit tha town. Some dispute had arisen over the Okupaf.a Road, and it was decided not to take a poll. Since then, however, tbe settlers there had regretted the step and, be believed, intended to ask tbe Council to take a poll for that road, but be would suggest that, everything c ngidered, the .ilawhia Riding could not be considered unfair if they applied for £250 of tbai; amount. He and several others had been round the town recently, aiad found that much work could be done, though £250 would remedy the worst defects. The question as to whether the whole riding would be raced or only the town would have to be decided by the ratepayers. The works he suggested doing were the following :—Tainui Street, £J2O ; Lethardt Street, £2O ; culvert, Tainui and Fairchild Streets, £2 10s ; Rosamond Terrace, £2 10s Te Puru Corner, £75 ; Pouewe Street, £2O; Cnorlton Street culvert, £lO. Total £250. If these improvements; were effected a big improvement would be made. The G >vernment ought to attend to the road to the Aotea, as it was iu a shocking state. Lights were also needed in the township. Mr Turrell : Double that amount, and ike a better job of the work undertaken.
Mr Mason : The grades will be permanent ones I suppose, Cr Jonathan : Yes. The amounts are only arrived at roughly. Mr Pettit suggested that £250 mighf be made do, thus leaving more for the settlers on the Okupata road, who needed it badly. Mr Turrell then moved, “ That the sum be £5OO in lieu of £250."
Mr Mason seconded pro forma. Mr Falwasser said that £5OO would be of no use, and it would ba far better to only gat £250 to effect urgent repairs. £10,090 was needed to do the work thoroughly. Mr Turrell remarked that when tbe expenses of the loan were paid there would not be £2OO left. He moved “ Tba’; the Kawhia Riding borrow £5OO to effect improvements upon the lines as stated, tbe matter to be gone into by a committee consisting of Messrs Jonathan, Hinton, Mason, E. Falwasser, and Dr Jenkins."
The chairman seconded the resolution, which was carried. After brief discussion the following resolutions weire slso unanimously carried ; Proposed by Mr Jonathan, seconded by Mt Hinton, “ That the wharf trustees be requested to erect a lamp at the approach to the wharf." Proposed by Mr Mason, seconded by Mr Falwasser, “ That the Council be asked to erect three lamps in suitable places in Jorvois Street, and that the Council be a.sked to urge upon the Government the’ necessity of improving the Kawbia-Aotea road, more especially as far as the cemetery.” Proposed by Mr Mason, seconded by Mr Falwasser, “ That the Council be asked to urge upon tbe Minister for Lands to take definite steps to prevent the sand encroaching upon Parangi Lake, this being the ultimate water supply and the only available supply fit to drink."
Proposed by Mr Falwasser, seconded by Mr Hinton, 11 • That the Council be asked to recommend to the Government the urgency of acquiring the swamp of 72 acres adjoining Kawbia township, the same being a most desirable block and easily brought into
Prsposed by Dr Jenkins, seconded by Mr Falwasser, “ That th°se recommendations bo forwarded to ths Council through the member for tho R ling." T io meeting then close J.
