Heavy 72in Twill Sheeting, gray, 1- M 4d yd, at Hinton and Hustler’s clearing Mile.* It is estimated ihat over 300 v acre of bash will be felled in this distric this year. At Hinton and Hastier's great clearing sale you can secure Heavy Striped Flannelette for 7|d per yard.* We understand that an important meeting of settlers will be held at Oparau to-morrow (Saturday) in connection with the Farmers’ Club. We believe that Mr T. Wake has issued a writ against the proprietor ot tbe Northern Luminary (published at Kawakawa) for substantial damages for alleged libel. By tbe s.s. Kia Ora on Friday last, Mr Douglas, of Te Rau-a-mo», bro ugh 1 from Waitara eight extra fine dairy heifers, which he intends to add to hie herd and milk for the factory. Our readers are reminded of the auction sale to-morrow (Saturday) at 2 o’slock at Kawhia, when several items will be offered by Mr A. R. Langley, including the well known oil launch Kinohaku. Ou Saturday, September 2nd, a football match will be played on the Oparau ground, when tbe busbfellers in Mr Elliott’s block will play r combined team of Oparau and Kawhia. A good game is expected. In mentioning the various sources of revenue to the Kawhia County, at tbe last meeting, Cr W. Shaw drew attention to the fact that billiard rooms should pay a license, but tbe matter was left over to be discussed when the by-lawe were being framed. Messrs Jonathan Ltd. are now having their cash orders packed in Auckland and consigned direct to clients, as they find it more profitable to do so. It is, of course, essential to make the orders fairly large, or the charges of delivery would be too heavy on their customers.* At tbe usual monthly meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board last week, a letter was read from the Hon. Wm. Hall Jones, in reply to a request from tbe Board asking that tbe Kawhia and Awakino Coantieei, be brought within the Waikato Hospital district, that the matter would receive careful consideration. Mr Hay lock, accompanied by his wife and family, arrived by the s.s. Kia Ora on Tuesday Inst, and proceeded to his section on tbeMarokopa River on Wednesday to take up his permanent residence there. Already Mr Haylock has put a lot of improvements on his bolding, and now in Lends working on a much larger scale. It is well known that in this colony there are a large number of inspectors, and such being the case it is about time that one put in an appearance at Kawhia, in connection with the noxious weeds, which are spreading rapidly. The Government ought to be brought to book for tbe disgraceful state in wbicji their reserves are. An impromptu meeting was held at Mr Mason’s office on Tuesday last, when it was decided to tender a complimentary “ waltz social ” to Miss Stevens and Mr Jonathan in Scott’s Hall, Kawhia, about the end of September, Mr Gosling was appointed secretary, and it was resolved to ask tbe ladies to provide refreshments. The admission was fixed at 3s, ladies free. Here’s something good I Women’s Chrome Lace Bals,, patent toe cap, 12/6, at Hinton and Hustler’s great clearing sale,* The town has been particularly busy during tbe past few days, owing to tbe appearance of a large number of natives, tbe occasion being the celebration of tbe marriage of Wi Mutate Te Ake (better known in Kawhia and Raglan as “ Mustard ”) and Mingi Amomako. The friends of the bride arrived in full force per launch from Hikuparea on Sunday, and in the afternoon the pab at R-ingiahua was quite gay, whilst a number of Pakehas visited tbe scene, displaying a keen interest in tbe festivities. The wedding was performed iu tbe native manner on Tuesday. Mr James {Mackenzie, Commissioner of Crown Lauds fur the Auckland district, visited the Te Rau-a-moa Special Settlement recently with Mr H. J. Greenslade, member of tbe Crown Lands Board. Speaking to our representative, Mr Mackenzie said that the ragwort was still a very serious menace to tbe settlement, but he hoped the Board would be able to cope with it during tbe coming season. Tbe aettlers, he says, are a good class of men and are doing their utmost to check tbe pest, but it is impossible for them to eradicate it without Government help. Hp thought it wonld be as well for them to keep more sheep on Ihe land, as they would assist in keeping down tbo ragwort, but unfortunately (from thia point of view) the settlers have committed themselves pretty fully to dairying, by starting a co operative butter factory.—Waikato Times. THE LONDON AND BERLIN PIANO COMPANY have forwarded to their Kawhia Agent a REVISED CODE of TERMS for payment of Pianos and Organs. All information and specimen instrument on view at the local Agency. Settler Printing.-, OfFiCB.
Attention is directed to the altered advertisement in this isaue of Mr F. A. Pearson. The meeting of members of" tbe Kawhia Braes Band, called for last week, did not eventuate, owing to tbe small attendance. Mosers J. Brough and J. M’Burney had ratlier an unpleasant experience at Oparau recently. Th*»v were out cattle hunting on the Mnakowbai block for fresh meat for Mr A. Ward’* camp of bushfellera (where they are employed) wheu they got lost. Darkness overtaking them they had *o camp under a rata tree all night. Both were without coats, and to make matters worse rain fell heavily from .bout 9 p.m. till daybreak, conaeq lently a good drenching was received, When daylight appeared the wanderers managed to pick up their bearings, and arrived at Symons’ mill not much the worse for their adventure. Mr Pettit has received the following letter from the secretary of Auckland Provincial Branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union :—“ Sir, — Year letter of the 16‘h of May, re xioua weeds, was road btforo (be Provincial Executive on the 18'h inst*, and in icply I am directed to say 1 hat ths Unicu las always supported measures forih’e purpose of eradicat ing noxious ’'weeds, but as to tbe methods to be adopted for their destraction in various localities, it would be best to leave the methods to be adopted for such localities to consider for themselves.—Yours, etc., Geobge J. Garland.” Ex-Goveruor Francis, of Missouri, speaks as follows of the local paper: ‘‘ Each year the local paper gives from £5OO to £lOOO in free advertising space to tbe community in which it is located. No oiher agency can or will do this. The editor, in proportion to hia means does more for a town than any 10 men. He ought te be supported, not because you like him personally, or admire hie writing, but because a local paper is the best n vestment a local people can make. It may not be brilliantly edited or overcrowded with thoughts, but financially it is more benefit to tbe community than the teacher or the p&eacher. Understand me, I do not mean morally or intellectually, bat financially.” A special line of Heavy H.C. Quills coloured, 8s 6d each, at Hinton, and Hustler’s great clearing sale.* AN TNT. Breathes there a man with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, “ I’ll pay before I go to bed Thao debt I owe the pr Ltsr.” If such there be, go mark him well, No bell shall toll his funerai knell, And if he dies he’ll go to—well, A place where there’s no winter.
