THE Kawhia Settler FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 1905. STOCK SALES : TO BE HELD AT OPARAU.
Some few weeks ago a meeting of Oparau settlers was held, wben it was decided that overtures be made to the Waikito auctioneers to hold a sale of stock at Oparau, those present unanimously agreeing that the time is now ripe for such an undertaking. Since the meeting several residents have been in Hamilton, and have each made it their business to impress upon the auctioneers the necessity of the request being complied with, and the result will be gleaned from our advertisement columns, where it is notified that the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company will conduct ft sale early in October, “ providing a sufficient number of entries are re calved.” From enquiries made of tbe local agent (Mr R. M'Cardle), we learn that tbe company estimates 350 head A “ sufficient number," and it is pleasing to know that already over 450 cattle have been entered, so the sale is now assured. What ibis means for the district it is bard to foretell, but the caving to settlers who require to stock tbeir holdings will be very great, whilst even the fact that the drive from Waikato to their sections—b distance varying from 80 to 60 miles —will be obviated, is indeed a big consideration. The future of these sales to a large extent depends upon the initial one, and we would strongly ad vise sectiers to extend tbeir patronage to tbe opening sale, so that it will be conclusively proved to tbe firm who have decided to commence operations at Oparau, that the requirements of this grand district must be attended to. Considering the thousands of head of stock that have been brought into this district during the past two years —and in the future a larger number will be required—wo predict that eventually the cities will be amongst the leading markftte of the North Island. To anyone who notes the very central position of Oparau this Let is apparent, and wben tbe reads through the Matakowbia blcflk and connecting tbe various places around the harbour ate constructed it dues nut take one
with the wisdom of a sage to prophesy that *he Oparau sales will be to Kawhia district what the Obaupo aater are to tbe Waikato. We congratulate the company upon the enterprise shown, and trust that it will meet with the whole h< acted sup port of every well-wisher of the district.
