Tbe s s Muritai arrived at tbe Kawhia wharf from Wauganui on Sunday morniag, after a very tempestuous voyage. The latter port was left on Friday, about 2 p.m., and the sterner shortly afterward encountered very severe weather, the wind blowing a hurricane, whilst th sea was also particularly rough. Captain Stevenson hove tbe Muriti to off Cape Egmont for some hours until the wind and sea moderated. The steamer was expected at the Kawhia Heads on Saturday afternoon, and was there awaited for by Mr W. Horgau, who had been engaged to pilot the vessel to Lemon Point, where it was proposed to land cattle and sheep for Mr Brown. The shipment comprised 100 sheep, 18 cattle and one horse, and on Sunday morning it was decided to make the wharf & secure Mr Newton’s pontoon, as the animpls were in rather a weak state after their severe trip. It speaks well for the efficency of Captain Stevenson and the qualities of the Murit«i as a sea boat that only four sheep were lost, and the owner was highly delighted that the cargo was landed so well, as when such bad weather was experienced he fully expected to lose half the number. The stock were transferred to Mr Newton’s pontoon and Messrs Morgan’s and Newton’s launches, and the steamer then towed the lot to the heads, tbe strange sight being appreciated by a large number of people assembled on the wharf. When the steamer cast tbe launches off the pontoon was taken to Lemon Point, where tbe stock were safely landed. Mr Brown was accompanied ou the trip hv his wife and family of five, his and Mr Biddock.
