OPARAU FARMERS CLUB.

(to the editob.)

Bib, —Regarding Mr Bell’s account of tbe Oparau Farmers* Union branch, Mr M'Ourdy spoke at Oparau and after hearing bis address those present evinced a desire [to join the Union. Wa were asked to ooms to a meeting on the Saturday; A large number (for an Oparau meeting) turned up to the school. We were then told that Mr Bell, secretary of the local branch, bad been asked to come, but had not, and that we were consequently debarred from joining. Mr Mackenzie was elected to the chair, aud a Farmers’ Club was formed, which now includes the bulk of the Oparau farmers, who intend to join the Union. Mr Bell knows well what the trouble is. lam practically a stranger yet, and it was only on the day Mr M‘Ocrdy spoke that I knew there was a local branch of the Union. After going to Oparau to join it and finding no meeting I, as the others who attended with the same object, felt rather disgusted. Mr Bell may have* acted as his thoughts and will dictated but he did hot get a vote of thanks from the meeting for not attending. Regarding what he writes about his letter to Mr Andersen : Mr Anderson, who is one of the most popr’ar farmers here, wrote and asked Mr Bell to come to the meeting—he could not compel him to do so. If I had been asked to attend a meeting of the Union, in common courtesy to Mr Anderson and those gentlemen who wished to join the Union, I should haye attended without a moment’s hesitation.—Yohrs, etc , OPARAU CORRESPONDENT.
