Oparau.

(FBOM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Mr Mackenzie has received the following letter from the Chief Engineer for Bridges, in reply to a plan he was asked to send for a bridge at Oparau : —“ Sir,—l have to acknowledge receipt of yours of May Bth, on the subject of the Okaputa Bridge. In reply I beg to state that your offer to build this bridge has been considered by the Hon. Minister for Public Works, who has decided to have a more permanent structure erected, provision for which will be carefully considered with the Estimates.—Yours, etc., C. W. Hursthouse. Chief Engineer.” If Mr Mac kenzie keeps at the authorities they may complete the Estimates some time, but like the Kawhia Trust have probably adopted taihoa as their motto. This loss of time, breaches of agreement and promises to the settiers has got to end. Our County Council must unanimously get upon Dick’s track and hurry up tbe Estimates. While they are baing prepared tbe settlers have to narry their stores over the river and ss long as they meekly do this the Estimates will take a long time to prepare. If some of the ohil dren fall off tbe log and get drowned we wi hear uora about it and probably get a bridge. Mr Mackenzie's plan was for a working strain of 15 tons, r id the lattir is only a put off on the Government’s part. Although tbe weather--has been very wet the grass and turnips are still growing and feed is everywhere plentiful. Disc harrowing the fer n land to a depth of 4in. to Sin. is being tried, and several of our farmers speak of top-dressing with lime, of which we have a good supply here.
