The Court at Melbourne has sanctioned a trial of the action, of the I Vacuum Oil company against the Age Newspaper Proprietory, a claim for £20,000 damages for alleged libel. A Socialist conference held in Berlin by 65 votes to 26 declared against Herr Liebknecht's anti-war attitude in the Prussian Diet. On the occasion of the opening of the A. and P. show at Marton on Wednesday, Mr E. Newman, M.P., referred to the enviable position we enjoyed through the splendid services of the British Navy in keeping our trade routes open. The Government, he said, had not fixed the price of next season's wheat, and he considered they were right in abandoning any representations to do so. Grain growing meant the circulation of an enormous amount of money. The latest available figures showed that 560,537 acres were down in crop, and it cost £5 10s to £6 per acre to put down a crop. This meant the circulation of £3,000,000 at least, and if the area could be increased this year the amount of money circulated would increase correspondingly. The fact that the Rotoura balneologiat is the possessor of a German name has apparently exercised some of the residents of the Hot Lakes dißtrict, who have not been sparing in their indignation at the presence of a "German" in a highly-paid position the Dominion. The matter was mentioned on Thursday morning to the Hon. R- Rhodes, Minister in charge of the Tourist Department. Mr Rhodes said that he was glad the question had been brougt before him, as it enabled him to remove a wrong impression* As a matter of fact, not only was Dr Wolmann English, but faia father and grandfather were English born. His wife was an Englishwoman, and his family had for many generations been settled in England. He understood that the question had been raised at the time of Dr Wohlmann's appointment many years ago and then the High Commissioner, A the Hon. W. P. Reeves, had cabled that Dr Woblmann's family had been English for two hundred years. He, personally, Was very sorry that Mr Woblmann had been subjected to annoyance on the question of his nationality, a nd after this pronouncement, the 'doctor, if the annoyance continued, would be prepared to take steps to put a stop to the malicious statements made regarding him.
