King Country Chronicle Saturday, Feb. 13th, 1915. ELECTRIC LIGHT LOAN.

The proposed additions to the electrical installation at Te Kuiti for which a loan is bow being promoted, have been subjected to the most minute consideration of the Borough Council, and it is to be hoped the meeting, which is to be held on Tuesday evening for the purpose of placing the position before the ratepayers, will be well attended. Like a good many similar installations the Te Kuiti plant has given considerable trouble in respect to various details, and the Council wisely deferred undertaking further expenditure pending an exhaustive report from a

reliable authority. The report of Mr F. Black, the well-known electrical engineer, provided for a much larger expenditure than the Council felt justified in undertaking at the present juncture, and only after considering the matter in every detail was the present proposal agreed upon. There is no doubt that the loan is urgently required in order to place this important public service on a satisfactory footing, and if the proposed extensions and alterations are not carried out in the near future, serious results may ensue, involving a much larger expenditure later on. Care has been taken in promoting the scheme to do so in the manner best calculated to place the electrical department on a payable footing. It has been demonstrated that under existing conditions without further outlay there iB little prospect of the department being sc-lf-supporting. and it is obviously sound business on the part of the Council to increase the outlay on the plant to such an extent as will ensure its achieving a sound position in the shortest possible time. Certain liabilities have already been incurred in connection with the installation, and these have been added to the amount proposed to be borrowed for eztensiosn. The ratepayers are faced with the responsibility of meeting this amount in any case, and unless the proposed further work is carried out there is little doubt that they will be called upon to meet an annual deficit on the working of the plant. The public will be afforded an opportunitv on Tuesday evening of having the position fully explained prior to being called upon to record their vote at the poll on Friday.
