EMPRESS PICTURES

A feature of the new programme submitted at the Empress Theatre last night was an interesting film of the "Life of General Villa," in six parts. The supporting films Were of exceptional merit, including Gaumont's lateßt War Budget. For Thursday and Friday, a star comedy by the famous Vitagraph Company, antitled "Goodness Gracious," will be screened. This film will be supported by a fine selection of interesting jects, including the latest War Budget.' Owing to the races on Saturday there will be no matinee that afternoon. PEOPLE'S PICTURE PALACE. __ * "THE DAY." In conjunction with . the pictureH which will be screened on Monday next, Mr Max Jefferson will appear in Conan Doyle's famous poem, "The Day." Mr Jefferson is said to be a character actor of exceptional .ability, ani his one-act dramas have betn received with marked enthusiasm everywhere. A very popular item in his repertoire, which will be given here, is a patriotic turn entitled "Face in the Firelight," and during which popular heroes and men of the moment Willi be screened. Mr Max Jefferson, who is under the direction of Edmund Carroll, Ltd., Will also appear in several successful Gordon playlets, among which are "The Last Shot," founded on an incident in the present war; "Footlights Memories," a one-act emotional drama, and "A Social Outcast." The company carry complete miniature stage settings for each playlet, which are claimed to be of a refined but highly entertaining nature.. • .
