TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Te Kuiti Borough Council was hela on Monday evening. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. Boddie), Crs M. J. Jones, Mostyn Jones, Martin, Mabbett, Somerville, James, and Elliott. River Deviation. —The Resident Engineer of the Public Works Department wrote stating plans for the work were under investigation, by the Department. Mangaorino Rating District. Messrs Broadfoot and Pinlay, on behalf of the Waitomo County Council, wrote suggesting that the original agreement in respect to the payment of the Borough's share of the Mangaorino special rates should be carried out. —The Mayor stated the Council had previously decided to carry but the agreement, but a raisunderstaning had arisen.'—lt was resolved to carry out the terms of the original agreement. Leave of Absence. —T. Rawlinson, a Borough employee, was granted leave of absence to attend the Fire Brigade demonstration at Timaru Mangaorino Road. —Mr 8. Webber wrote drawing attention to the dangerous state of a portion of the Mangaorino road within the Borough, and requesting that something should be done to render the ro&d safe.—The Mayor Btated he was thoroughly in sympathy with the request, but it was a question of funds. —Referrc-d to the Works Committee. Street Watering.—Cr Mostyn Jones drew, attention to the street watering, and urged that the work be done earlv in the mornings.—Referred to foreman. Rora Street. —Cr James referred to the work of putting down tarred macadam at the approach to the railway station. —The matter of whe:her the work be done forthwith or left until the street ' was completed was discussed, and it was decided, on the motion of Crs Somerville and Mariin, that the work be don*. Cr Martin referred to the state of the street where grass was growing, and to the efforts of the Beautifying Society. The Mayor Haid at present the plant used for doing the street work would have to be kept on the portion of the street as at present, but it would be a pity to see the work which had been done by the public nullified. He suggested that the reeerve should be weeded and the grass cut. As to the other portion at present used for the street plant he would be pleased to aupply a plough team and man for a day to plough up the area as soon as it was free.
Electric Light Loan. —In view o± the fact that the poll for the electric light loan was to .be taken on Friday, 19th inst., it was decided to hold a meeting of ratepayers on Tuesday, 16th inst., for tbe purpose of placing the position before the ratepayers. Electric Light.—The matter of having the electric light cut off from consumers failing to pay was dis-r cussed, and on the motion of Crs Mostyn Jones and Somerville, it was decided that owners of houses in which tbe tenants are consumers Bhould be written to before the light is cut off.
Special Meeting.—lt was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday evening next to deal with the by-laws and with the applications for tfie position of electrical engineer. REPORTS, The following reports were adopted:—
Foreman's Maintenance: During tne month the ordinary work of the Borough has been carried out. The roads outside the town are being carefully watched and all holes in them filled up. The water tables are somewhat in a bad state and require cleaning, which will be gone on with as soon as possible. ' The storm water ditches are all in a very bad state, and as it was authorised by the Council they be cleaned out each year, I intend to make a start to have all of them cleaned out. All noxious Weeds on the Esplanade and quarry sites have been cut down and all footpaths where the grass had grown high, has also been cut. —Rora Street Breastwork: Careful attention is being paid to this, and so far since last meeting no further damage has occurred. —Quarrying, Te Kumi: Crushing melal at the quarry has been carried out the whole of the month everything working very satisfactorily. A considerable amount of clay has been shifted off the stone at places. This work is done when an opportunity arises. The number of men engaged at the quarry at present is six.—Sewers: These are being carefully attended to, being flushed out every week and kept in a clean condition. The sewerage in connection with the Railway ' Department has been completed very satisfactorily.—Awakino Road: Metalling of this road is being carried on and to date a distance of 34 chains has been completed. The approximate expenditure to date on this road is £2OO. Total yards of metal spread to date is 500 cubic yards,—Waterworks: An inspection of the pipe line and dam at Waiteti was made on January 28th, everything being found satisfactory. Considering the very dry season the supply is holding out very well, the dam being very nearly full when the inspection was made. A considerable amount of work has been done during the month laying on connections to the mains.—Esplanade, King Street to Ngarongo Street: Metalling is now being carried out on the Esplanade to complete the portion of this road from King street to Ngarongo street. The completion of this road completes all the metalling authorised under Loan No. 5. —Rora Street: Work in connection with the completion of laying down the remainder of the tarred macadam has been proceeding and to date there is a distance laid of eight chains ready for the top dressing The total esDenditure to date on this ; work i 3 £7O.—T. Works, Water, and Drainage Committee—That Mr John Sutherland's request to have the sewerage extended'aa far as his section in Hinerangi street be not entertained, owing to the heavy expenditure which would be entailed; that a sum not exceeding £5 be expended on forming a narrow foot track at the far end of Elizabeth street leading to Mrs F. C. Jones' property; that the verbal request of the Saleyards Company to have a ford made down to the river at the rear of the saleyards be acceded to, and a sum not exceeding £5 be expended on the work upon the understanding that the necessary fencing required be erected at the company s own and that the agreement made for allowing stock to ford through the river at this point to terminate at the. will of the Council; that the arrangement arrived at with the Soltar Co. for testing their road material be now carried out, and a piece be laid c'own in Carroll street in lieu of Sheridan street as previously arranged.
