HEWLETT PICKED UP AT SEA.

Wellington, Saturday

The High Commissioner's office reports.from London on January Ist: Flight-Commander Hewlett was picked up by a steam trawler in the North Sea and landed at Yrauiden, in Holland.

The trawler picked up Comander Hew-, lettjiear Heligoland after six huuiß' immVrsion. The trawler was unable to enter the port owing to storms.

Flight-Commander Hewlett; upon being interviewed; said he ran into a thick fog, and afterwards found liincself \n the vicinity of the Schleswig coast. He then bore down behind Cuxhaven, over German territory. When the fog cleared he found he had lost hia bearings. He flew over the great German fleet and a number of trawlers behind Heligoland. A terrific fire was opened on him, but he dropped several bombs, and believed that he hit a warship, as he saw- smoke rising from her. Later bis motor ran hot, and he was forced -to' descend. He alighted near a Dutch trawler, and sank bis seaplane before leaving her.
