BKEAKING-UP DAY. PUBLIC SCHOOL. Breaking-up day for the Christmas holiiayß is always a red-letter day to school children and yesterday tha occasion at Te Kuiti public Bchool was marked in a very pleasant manner. Mr Crabbe, who hss been master at the High School eince it was established at Te Kuiti, has been promoted to the mastership of tha High School at Waihi, and on the occasion of his departure the pupils presented him with a handsome tobacco pouch. Miss Ahier, who is resigning, was presented by her pupils with a solid silver-backed hand mirror. Misses Badger, Mabbett, and Goodyear also received handsome gifts from their pupils. Prior to the school being dismissed, Mr E. A. rower, the headmaster, addressed tha assembled children. He referred to the excellent feeling between teachers and pupils and wished them all a "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year." COLLEGIATE SCHOOL. The prize-giving ceremony at the above school took place yesterday aiternoon. There was a large gathering of parents, children and visitors. In the Mayor's absence Mr R. M. Somerville presented the _ prize. The proceeding commenced with the singing of "God Save the King" A recitation was given by Nora Cochrenr, and a song by the smaller chiliren; Muriel Hawlay played a pianoforte solo. Each item was appreciated by those present. Before presenting the prizes Mr Somerville in his remarks noted the growth and progress of the Bchool, and stated that children cojld be prepared for the Proficiency certificate and also for Civil Service and Matriculation. He stated that this year the prizeß were allotted on the year's marks, and that first and second in each form would be given. The prizeß were allotted as folioss:— Form IV.b: Elste Gadsby, first i. History, English, Gecgrahpy, Physiology; Doris Spencer, first, Mathematics, French. Form Ilia: Burnell Macdonald 1, Muriel Hawley 2. Form Ha.: Lance Macdonald 1, Nora Cochrane 2:. Form La: Leonard Hsttaway 1, William Higgs 2. Form I.b: .Euphemia Higgs and Emme Hattaway 1. Primer IV, : Edgar Jones 1, Rolf Johnston 2. Primsr III.: Ona Brewer 1, Naomi Ellison. Primer II.: Gwen Davidson and Clifford Garhck 1. Primer I.: Mary Rother J, Evan Cameron. Special Prizes. —Attendance, ' Mrß Gadsby'e, Muriel Hawley, William Higgs. Scripture: Rev. F. M. Beatties'e, Walter Vercoe 1, Nora Cochrane 2; Rev. C. Houshen's, Doris Spencer 1, Charles Matthew 2. Conduct, Mrs Macdonald's, Olive Moore. Music, Miss Graham's Margaret Matthew, Audrey Stevens. Sewing. Mesdamps Graham, Vercoe, and Lamb, Doris Spencer 1, Elsie Gadbsy 2, Severine Albrechtsen 3. After the presentation cf prizes Mr Somerville called upon the Rev. Mr Beattie, as a representative of the public School Committee, to make a few remarks. Before the proceedings closod a recitation was given by Edgar Jones, a Bong by the upper children, and a pianoforte solo by Doris Spencer. Afternoon tea was then dispensed and enjoyed by some people. At the conclusion of the function, Mr Somerville announced that the children had asked him to make a presentation, on their behalf, to Miss lorns and Miss Wilton. To the former he presented a manicure set, and the latter a jewellery case.
