BUSH AND GRASS FIRES.
RAGING IN HAWKE'S BAY
Dannevirke, Tcuraday
The fires which were raging in Ngapaeruru and surrounding district yesterday became very severe, and a number of residents of Dannevirke went out to assist the settlers in fighting the flames. No houses have been lost in this locality, but many stock have preished. The firsa are still burning. The newly-settled Otawhao Block has also been swept by fire, and it is reported that five settlers, Mesar* C. L. Olaen, Clayton, Hunt, Pritchard, and Bee, have had residences swept away. Their lossee in other directions are also heavy. , • DAMAGE NEAR WAIPAWA. Waipawa, Thursday. Extensive bush and grass fires are raging in the Blackburn district, about 22 miles from here, the result of exceptionally heavy winds. Settlers have experienced an anxious time. It was only by the exertions, of helpers from neighbouring towns that they were able to prevent several houses being burnt. Mr J. Cook has lost his house and furniture.
