WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Council was held in the County Office on Monday evening. There were present Crs Scholes, chairman, Potts, Jackson, Smyth, Warren, Berry. Were, Willis, and Johnston.
In reply to a request to the Minister | of Public Works to be present at the opening of the Eawa bridge, the Minister replied that he would E>9 present if possibie.—The Council decided to leave the official opening until after the holidays and that the Min ister of Public Works, also the Native Minister be informed of the date. Resolved that the matter of the Ngapaenga telephone be left in the hands of Cr Were and the clerk, thf* Counc : l agreeing to give their assistance as far as possible. On the motion of Crs Johnston and Berry it was resolved that the amount due in connection with Sriowden's claim for accident, viz., £394 14a 4d, be paid. A letter was received from the Labour Department, Auckland, askina whether the Council could see their way to provide work for unemployed, stating that there were some 200 men used to the work, at present out of employment. —The clerk instructed to reply that most of ths work was let by contract.
Several letters were received from settlers regarding expenditure of thirds.
Mr E. Bennett, Kaeaea, wrote with reference to caltla and horaes running on tbe roada and stated that they were doing a lot of damage. —Cr Smyth thought that the Council should taks steps to ramedy this evil. —The engineer was authorised to take step 3 in such casss.
Mr-A. W. King wrote complaining of a Dull wandering on his road, stating t'oat it was a nuisance and dangerous.—Tha Council decided to take action in the matter.
A petition, s : gned by ratepayers on the Te Ahurua road, asking fur a road to connect the Ta Ahurua road with the borough boundary, was received. The pstitnnars stated-that thay ware willing to guarantee all costs in connection therewith to be paid by special rata. They asked the Council to put tbe matter in band at an early date. —Resolved that the matter be left'in the hands of Cr Berry and the ckrk to dssl with.
It was resolved that all chequss be signed by two cuuncillors and countersigned by the treasurer. Resolved that tha chairman and clerk sign debentures in connection with the Kio Kio loan and the Parehaka loan and affix the Council's seal thereto.
Resolved that tha matter of fencing the quarry on Messrs Kendall and Sundvicks' property be isft in the hands of Cr Jackson and the engineer. Cr Willis gave notice of motion, whicj ha intended to move at next meeting of the council, "That a teamstfr and team of hors«a be obtained by the Council, also that a dray ba purchased, sam 9to be used for patching road?." Tha clerk was instructed to make application to the Advances Department for £IOOO on account of the Kawa lian. On the motion of Cr Jackson the engineer was instructed to hire a team and men to clean out water tables and trim metal and fill up holes with the grader on all county roads within the Aria, Paemako and Mairoa ridings during the summer months.
Cr Were drew attention to the state of tha road at tha borough quarry, and thought something should be done in the matter.
Resolved that the Council place oi record the gratitude of the Council for the services rendered by Cr3 D'wyer and Gregg during their term of office. Several councillors Bpoke co tha motion.
Tenders for metalling on the Mairoa south road were received aB follows:—H. Rothery 3s lOd per cubic yard, H! E. Lewis 3s lOd, Puna Walca 3s, Todd 3s lid.—On the motion of Crs Jackson and Potts Mr Lewis' tender was accepted. Accounts amounting to £6lll Is 10d were passed for payment.
