EXPENDITURE Of GRANTS.

MATTER DISCUSSED

At the meeting of the Waitomo County Council on Monday evening a discussion took place on the expenditure of Government grants. Cr Willis considered that the Council should certainly spend these grants, not the Department. The chairman and engineer thought it better to get the Dapartment to do the work as ai present tbeCouncil was fully occupied, and it would mean obtaining further assistance in the way of staff. Cr Berry pointed out that all expenses in connection with the preliminary work had to be borne by tbe Council. The engineer stated that sometimes after sending his plana to the Department they were held up for some months. Cr Were thought that the Depart ncent should first be requested to do the wnrk. Cr Willis moved that the Council urge upon the Government the advisability of spending the grant for the Tapuae road at once, as settlers urgntly required this rpad.—Carried.
