RUSSIAN BALTTLE FRONT.

A COSSACK DASH. REVERSE AT OSTERLODE.] DETAILS OP ENGAGEMENT. London, Friday. The Daily Mail correspondent daringly penetrated to East Prussia and witnessed the Augustwo fighting. In one case a troop of Cosßacks attacking German batteries collected Btaeep and csttlt! and drove them on the German entrenchments. Thay then charged their horses over the platform of flesh, sabring the gunnerß in the trenches. The following is th" first detailed account of the Osterlode disaster. General Rennenkampf seemed certain to capture Konigsberg, but General Phillinski's army advanced two bodies, one via Lyck the other by way of Soldau, and the Germans allowed the Russian vanguard to emerge from the swamps to reach firm ground at Osterlode. General- Hindenberg, who had previously experienced the identical problem at the manoeuvres on that very ground, hurried up his artillery from Thorn and Graudenz. Reinforcements from the Rhine and Belgium also arrived, and were hurled upon the Russians at Neidenburg. The Russians were driven into swampy country surrounding the lake. The German reserves were then thrown on the Russians right at Ortelsburg forcing it also into the swamps. - The Germans next occupied high ground on three Bides of the lake. Towards evening the Germans closed m and concentrated their fire. The Russians, unabla to manoeuvre, sank in the swamp, and horses and men were bogged. Only the Sixth and half of the First Army Corps escaped across the frontier. General Hindenburg then searched ninety-four miles in four days to cut off General Rennenkampf, but tha latter had already taken precautions. Ha sent a force to Lyck and many men to Suwalki. The Germans defeated the Lyck force, but General Rennenkampf was able to retreat in good order.
