FLAGS BRAVELY DEFENDED. Received Tuesday,ll.2s p.m. London, Monday. The' Evening News states during the battle at Marne terrible engagements occurred at Senes small farmhouses, which several times were captured and recaptured. The French were endeavouring to capture the German eagle, but failed. Finally the French flag was hoisted, the Germans retreating after a terrific encounter for the standards. Throughout the battlefield the French defended the flags with amazing valour and devotion. 5 In one case probably twenty infantry holding the flag Were successively cut down, but a fresh comrade was always ready to replace the fallen until succour arrived.
