OTOROHANGA.

Own Correspondent,

MUNICIPAL HALL,

A special meeting of the Otorohanga Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday last to consider the plans of the proposed new hall. There was a large attendance, Me?srs H. Benner and J A. Ormsby representing the Town Council. A considerable discustisn took place, Messrs Benner, Worthington, Cook, Willis, and Ormsby beng the principal speakers. The majority of those present thought that a supper room should be added. A committee consisting of Messrs Cook, Worthington, Willis and Bell was appointed to wait on the Town Council and place suggested alterations before them at a special meeting held on that account on Monday last.

At this meeting, at which a' full council was present, Mr Worthington acted as spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce committee, and placed the Chamber's views before the Council. He said that a supper room was very rssential and hoped that the Coucnil would be abh to have the plans altered accordingly. He quite realised the financial aspect of the case. The other members of the deputation also spoke on similar lines. The chairman, Mr J. Ormsby, said the Council would respect the views of the Chamber as far as possible, but the great difficulty was shortage cf funds.

The Council then went into committee and decided to add eight feet to the rear of the building. Messrs Clark and Moore, the successful tenderers provided the necessary bond of £2OO, will, it iB estimated, commence the building forthwith. UNIMPROVED VALUE RATING.

A petition, signed by 40 odd ratepayers, has been forwarded to the Otorohanga Town Council asking that a poll of ratepayers be taken on the question of rating on unimproved value. Tho matter will be brought up at next meeting of th 9 Council. DRUM AND FIFE BAND. At the inspection of Waikato and King Country Cadets by General lan Hamilton at Claudelandß. on Tuesday last, the 82nd Cadets' drum and fife band, Otorohanga, acquitted themselves very efficiently. To the band fell tha duty of leading about 1500 Cadeta past the saluting post, and this they did in a very soldier like manner, and the conductor, the Eev. Harvey, must he congratulated on the manner in which he has brought the boy? along. On the night before the inspection, the commanding officer of the local company, Lieut. Closey, informed the Rev. Harvey, that the band would be required to march past in i line formation, a formation that it had never practised befora. On such short notice the band had hot much opportunity of getting acquainted with tho movement. They therefore deserve all the more praise for their very creditable performance.
