NAVAL DEFENCE.
NEW ZEALAND'S POLICY. AUSTRALIA HOPES FOR CHANGE. Sydney, Thursday. Mr Jo-eph Cook, Federal Premier, sp9aking at a banquet at Wangaratta, referring to reliance upon the Japanese Treaty for peace in the Pacific, said that "at all cost they must defend the White Australia policy. He believed i-tfcat the time was ripe for the development of naval defence, and would like to aee Canada and South Africa around the conference table, as well bs Australia and New Zealand. The Dominion had so far kept to the idea of contributing to the strength of the Imperial Navy. On the other hand, Australia had begun to develop her own Navy. He hoped Mr Massey'a latest tpeech was indicative of the feeling of New Zealand, and that they would soon be able to welcome the Dominion into the compact.
