MAIROA EAST LOAN.

SHORTAGE OF SUBSIDY

APPLICATION FOR INCREASE. The settlers on that portion of the Mairoa road between Pio Pio and the Mairoa special rating area have raised a loan of £2OOO for metalling purposes. A subsidy has been granted for the loan to the amount of £IOOO being just half the necessary amount. The matter came before the Wanomo County Council on Monday evening when correspondence was read between the clerk and the member for the district, Mr U. K. Wilson. The clerk strongly urged that further subsidy of £looo°should be granted, otherwise a stretch of two or three miles of unmetallcd road would be left in a circuit of forty miles of metalling. Some misunderstanding evidently took place concerning the subsidy, as Mr Wilson in a previous letter stated he was only asked to get £IOOO subsidy. The clerk stated he had written originally asking for the full subsidy, and anv request for a less amount must have come from another source. He had also written to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works asking for the increased amount, but the reply from the Minister of Public Works 3tated it was impossible to grant the additional amount this year.

The clerk also read a letter from Mr Wilson stating as the Council had omitted to apply for the loans under section 9 of the 1912 Act, which provides for concessions for outback work he, the member, had done so, and had received the assurance from the Advances Department that the applications would be granted. The clerk said no doubt Mr Wilson had done his best for the district, but he was under a misapprehension. He read letters written on August 4th to Mr Wilson and the super.ntendent of the Advances Department in which he made it clear the loans were applied for under section 9 of the Act of 1912.
