TE AHUROA ROAD.
AN URGENT WORK.
DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL
A deputation consisting of Messrs A. Julian and Coombs, introduced by Cr Berry, referred to the necessity of work being done on the Te Ahuroa road. Mr Julian said that Mr Coombs waited on the Minister recently and showed a plan indicating the manner in which the road would serve both native and Crown property. The Minister made the provision that the settlers Bhould raise £ for £ and the amount should be spread over the whole road from end to end. The speaker pointed out that the Kopaki settlers would have to use the road for access to the markets at Te Kuiti and it would be desirable to constitute a special rating area in order to raise a loan to construct the road throughout. He was of opinion the work could be done for about. £3OO a mile. Mr Coombs said there was no doubt in his mind that the amount was granted as £ for £, and it was only provided on condition that the road ??as taken to Crown land. He was anxious that the £250 should be raised to get the grant utilised. There was also a chance of getting a grant from the Lands Department seeing that the road was to give access to Crown lands. However, he would be glad to fall in with any larger scheme for a loan.
The chairman Baid that the Council providing the money meant the settlers coming to light. The Council would be only too glad to assist in any manner. Personally, he thought if a special loan was raised to form the road throughout with the assistance of a £ for £ subsidy, that would be the best course. He did not believe in merely forming a bridle track and a duplication of loans would be inadvisable. It was eventually decided that the engineer and Mr Julian should go over the road and form an estimate with a view to raising a special loan to construct the road, a £ for £ subsidy to be applied for.
