PUBLIC WORKS FUND.
A STRONG POSITION.
The House was informed by the Hon. James Allen this week that the total available ways and means in the Public Works Fund on September llth was £270,295. As to the liabilities, the Minister could not tell exactly, but they ware very much less than at tha corresponding period of last year. In addition to the amount stated, there was £675,000 ye* to be transferred from the Consolidated Fund, and he was hopeful that this would enable the Government to continue public works until February or March. It might be necessary to anticipate by 3 month or two the loan for which the Government waa asking. Even if this was done the country would be in a very much Btronger position than at the beginning of thi3 year. He was sorry to say that tbe public building vote was going up. There was the Parliament Buildings to provide for, so that it could not be helped. He would also have to spend £150,000 on school buildings, and probabiy a considerable amount would also have to be provided for the purchase of a site for the Auckland University, and heavy amounts would be re quired for pest offices and mental hospitals.
