BUILDING REGULATIONS.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL

BLOCK TO PROGRESS

At Monday evening's meeting of the Borough Council Mr D. Morgan waited on the council with respect to an application for permission to shift a building on Rora street to another part of his section. Mr Morgan explained that there was a demand for greater accommodation at his boarding house, and he was desirous of removing a building fronting the street further back on the section with a view to erecting another building in brick or concrete on the site of the present building. The building which it was desired to remove was practically new, and it would be a heavy loss to him to pull it down and sell it. Originally it had been erected with a view of adding another floor to it, but he understood, according to the by-laws, be could not add to it in timber. He wished to enlarge the premises and was prepared to build in brick or concrete providing he could move the present building. Cr Jones supported the application pointing out that it would bs a block to the progress of the town to hold up buildings by adhering to the strict letter of the by-law.

The Mayor, in reply to Mr Morgan, said at present the council had no power to grant the application. Unfortunately it was impossible to enact laws for the general goo 3 without injustice in individual cases, and the preventing of Mr Morgan carrying out improvements would be a hardship. There was a notice of motion with a view to amending the by-law which would come up later together with other motions bearing on the by-laws and he would move that they should be referred to a special committee with a view to having the whole question adjusted. When the notices of motion were being dealtwith later it was decided to refer them to a special meeting of the council to be held on September 22nd.
