ARBOR DAY AT TE KUITI.

PLANTING THE ESPLANADE.

When the oificiai Arbor Day for the Dominion arrived this year the Te Kuiti residents were not piepared to celebrate the occasion in a fitting manner. However, the Ratepayers' Association took the matter in hand and concluded arrangement n for earriyng out a scheme of planting on the Esplanade, Wednesday last being the day fixed for the function. Unfortunately the day dawned cold and wet and continued so just long enough to make it advisable to cancel the afternoon tea arrangements, and then old Sol broke forth indbrightened the scene, the afternoon proving all that could be desired in theway of weather. The attendance on the Esplanaie was surprisingly large, and all seem?d to enjoy themselves thoroughly. Quite an army of willing workers turned out with spades and shovels, and when the school children marched into the ground about 3 p.m., everything was laid out ready for planting. This was done by the scholars in quite a professional manner, and practically without supervision. The committee wish to express their thanks to the Oparure Band for turning out in such force and rendering such a pleasing programme. What with the music and the sunshine Te Kuiti's first Arbor Day maybe voted a thorough success, despite the curtailment of the programme owing to the unfortunate forenoon. Many are now waiting anxiously to see the photographs secured by our local photographer. The secretary will be pleased to hear from all those who promisrd financial support at their earliest convenience, as it is

desirable that all accounts should be squared off and a public statement made at as early a date as possible.
