WAIKATO HOSPITAL BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of the board was held on Thursday at Hamilton. Mr Bailey presided, and the other members present were: Messrs Whittaker. Ryburn, Laurie, Paterson, Chepmell, Shaw, Finch, Campbell, Johnstone and Dr Kenny.
Consumption. —Dr Yalintine sent on a pamphlet on "Consumption and How to Prevent It," for circulation in the district. Balance-sheet.—The balance sheet submitted showed that the receipts for the pssf year amounted to £16,066 6s 4d, including £5318 13s 9d paid by local bodies; Government subsidy, £'7-528 lis Sd : payments by patients. £IB2B 9s 9d (a record for the institution for onn year): voluntary contrij tuitions £l-55 Ss 7d. The chief items jof expenditure outside ot ordinaiy maintenance were £2403 16s 8d for additions to the Nurses' Home, and the erection of the Bailey Ward; £BB2 for charitable aid, and £669 16s 3d for the maintenance of the Taumarunui Hospital, the cash balance being £1331. The total assets were valued at £36.160. and the liabilities were statpd at £7148, including the loan of £7OOO for new buildings. Superintendent's Report.—Dr Douglas reported that Dr Findlay, a graduate of Dunedin University had arrived on July 16tb. and began his duties as second assistant immediate- ; !y. Word had been received from ! Wellington that Miss Lily Burke had j passed the State examination. She was on duty ad acting sister in the surgical ward. One of the senior probationers, Nurse M. Ansenne, left at very short notice and this, combined with the large amount of sickness in the nursing staff, made them short-handed. Two applicants for probation, Miss Harrowell, of Te Kuiti, and Miss King, of Ngaruawahia, were sent for and had entered upon duty. Great difficulty had been experienced in the laundry owing to the extremely showery month. For the period ended August 27th there were at the date of last return 70 male and 35 female patients in the hospital; admitted since 79 males and 45 females; deaths, seven male 3 and two females; discharged, 60 males and 44 females; remaining, 82 males and 34 females. The daily average number of patients for the past month was 117. _ I The report was adopted. i
