THE BIBLE SOCIETY.

A YEARS' WORK. The Rev. F. Spencer, organising secretary for the British and Foreign Bible Society, will visit Te Kuiti and lecture on the work of the in St. Luke'a Sunday school hall on Thursday, September 4th, at 8 p.m. Again the society reports progress and now prints the Scriptures in 440 different languages, Its issue last year was 7,394,523 copies. Looking out across the society's large fields of labour, we note that last year 450,00U books were circulated among the Latin Continental natoins; more than 700, 000 among the German and Slav peoples of Central Europe; 558,000 in the Russian Empire; more than 200.000 in Africa; 270,000 in South and Central America; and 210,000 in Canada. Among the dense populations of Asia, over 900,000 books were circulated in the Indian Empire, anrl 1,650,000 in China, notwithstanding the revolution: both these totals exceeding all previous records. The Bishop of London has said of the work of this soicety, that it is the modern equivalent to the gift of tongujs on the day of Pentecost, and so is God's message to millions in many tongues. All interested in the Bible are invited to attend. There will be a collection at the close of the meeting.
