TE KUITI STREETS.

DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL

LAYING DOWN FOOTPATHS

The jtate of the streets in Te Kuiti during the winter has never been good, and as each winter arrives the residents are forced to prepare for an extremely unpleasant time. In drawing up the estimates for the last loan arranged by the council provision was made for the laying down of permanent footpaths on all the chief streets, and it was hoped the work could be put in hand prior to the present winter. As a matter of fact, tenders for the work were called, but the work got no further. At Monday evening's meeting of the council Cr Mostyn Jones referred to the footpaths when the Works Committee's report cams up for consideration. Cr Jones said he felt so strongly on the matter that he would move as an amendment to the motion for the adoption of the report that the report concerning the footpaths be referred back to the Works Committee with the express wish that the Committee should put the matter of the footpaths in Rora, Sheridan, Taupiri and King steets in hand at once. The mover said it was stated a? one of the chief reasons against the work that it could not be done in winter. He held a different view. They had lost much valuable time and the very best of weather by not going ahead with the work. Moreover the work could be done more cheaply now than later when men would be hard to get. Cr Graham seconded the amendment pro forma. Cr Walsh said he agreed with the mover, but there were wheels within wheels. No doubt the paths were very bad, but were the levels available. The Mayor said they would all like to see the work done as soon as possible, but it was a permanent work and they had to be quite certain the levels were right. They had to have the paths extended to a width of IS feet and kerbing put down. It would be wise to get all the drainage connections in before this was done. He did not think it wise to do anymore patching as they did not want to spend any more money prior to doing the permanent work. Cr Graham wished to know the position of the levels, and the clerk explained that the plan of the four chief streets had been partly done. Cr Matthew said he thought it was essential the councillors should understand the exact position (aken up by the Works Committee. The fact was that thev did not have full confidence that the levels were correct. It was 3 permanent work, and after full consideration they had deemed it advisable to await the advent of the foreman before putting the work in hand. They all recognised the matter was in imperative work. Cr M. J. Jones said they had also overlooked the fact that the paths had to be widened to IS feet, and in order to do that a lot of clay would require to be carted. In places the clay would have to be placed right across the full width. To do this now would make the main streets absolutely impassable. The amendment was lost and the report adopted.
