ELECTRIC LIGHT CONNECTIONS.
LIABILITY OF CONTRACTOR.
In commenting upon ths report of the Electric Light Committee at the Borough Council meeting on Monday evening, the Mayor said the committee had gone into the question of the lability of the contractors to put in house connections. The contract specified that the contarctors were to put in house connections up to the number of 160. The consulting engineer, Mr Crookes, said he understood this clause was not intended to apply as he (the Mayor) interpreted it. The committee had endeavoured to glean some further information cooncerning the matter from Mr Crookes, but nothing further had yet been learned.
Cr Howarth said he was emphatically of the opinion that the contractors were liable for the work. He pointed out, however, that the liability would not last fur ever, and if the council voluntarily continued to make connections such action might jeopardise the council's position. He thought that as soon as they had got to the bottom of the matter the contractors should be served with notice to effect the connections as agreed. He moved that the Electric Light Committee be asked to consult with the borough solicitor concerning the liability of Messrs Burt and Co., and power given them to notify the contractors to make the connections. The motioon was carried unanimously.
