FENCING THE FOOTPATHS.
Some time ago in order to prevent the footpath at the corner of Dr McRae's residence from being cut up by horse and vehicular traffic the borougn engineer caused to be erected at the corner a post and wire obstruction. In crossing the road at night Mr Dransfieli tripped over the wire and sustained certain bruises, abrasions and injuries for which he claimed from the council the sum of £SO by way of compensation. The matter was referred tj tha Legal and Finance Committee, and at Monday night's meeting of the council the following recommendation made by the committee was adopted "That the clerk be instucted to write to Mr Dransfield expressing the council' sorrow and regret at the accident which befell him, and intimate that the council consider lhat they were quite within their legal rights in erecting wire in the position it was, for the purpose of protecting the footpath, and that being so the council must disclaim any liability in connection with the matter." The following recommendation was made by the Committee in connection with a claim for compensation by Mrs T. Carroll for injuries sustained through walking into an open drain near the eastern end of King street bridge:— "That the clerk be instructed to write to Messrs Broadfoot and Finlay expressing the council's regret that the accident happened to Mrs Carroll, but intimating that the council disclaim any liability in connection with the matter."
