WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.
- - The usual monthly meeting of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuiti on Monday evening There were present Cra Schoies (chairman), Hoffman, Smyth, Were, Gregg and Johnston. Crusher at Aria. —The assistant road engineer wrote with respsct to a request for the immediate return of the crusher lent to the council intimating that the head office had wired cancelling the previous instructions. —Received. Ivliroahuiao-Matiere Road. The assistant road engineer wrote intimating that he was instructed to hand over grants for metalling on the road to the council. The amount of grants together with the sum raised by the council would total £640. In order to exp dits the work the council was authorised to let the work in petty contracts or by piece work but not by day labour. —Received. Special Loan Area. —The Valuation Department wrote stating there appeared to be no way of altering a special rating area It appeared to be taken for granted that the conditions under which a loan was granted should stand. —Received.
Hospital Representation.—The Inspector General of Public Health wrote intimating that Mr A. Schoies together with Mr J. Boddie, had been appointed to represent the combined districts of Waitomo County, Te Kuiti Rorough, and Ohura County on the Waikato Hospital Board. —Received. Access Road.—The chief surveyor, New Plymouth, wrote with respect to a road to Rangitoto Tuhua 68 I 2 B 4, that it had been ruled that a road to the land of one person is not a public road of itself and cannot be takon or forced through under any Act. The only course he could ses for Mr Barker to get a road to his homestsad was to buy the land for it and dedicate it. In that case no authority from him to survey would be necessary. Received. Messr3 Broafoot and Finlay on behalf of Mr 3 Lusher, owner of Lot 3, of Te Kuiti, No * 8 B No. 1 block, requesting the council's assistance in obtaining road access and offering to indemnify the council against all cost?. —Referred to the engineer to report. Mangakohai Road. —Mr A. Savill wrote for information as to thirds available on the road with a view to a metalling scheme. —Received. Tangitu Telephone. —Messrs Broadfoot and Finlay wrote enclosing Deed of Grant of Easement for signature in respect to the Tangitu telephone. They also suggested that a further separate agreement should be entered into by the settlers in addition to the petition.—Left in the hands of the solicitors. Mangapiko Petition. —Mr F. Stanwell, on behalf of petitioners wrote thanking the council for the capable manner in which the council had handled the petition.—Received. Mangaiti Thirds —Mr E. A. Guilford Wrote asking for information concerning the Mangaiti thirds. —Received. New Road.—Mr A. W. Cneal wrote stating he had forwarded plans for road taken through Kinohaku East No. 1 and No. 1 blocks, and requesting a payment t>£ 50 per cent, of amount. —Left to the clerk to consult with the solicitors.
Otewa Metalling Scheme.—Mr F. Porter wrote requesting information regarding the plan supplied. Received. Grants Applied For. Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, wrote acknowledging receipt of list of grants and stating he would place same fully before the Ministers. Mr Wilson also wrote urging the council to push on special loan applications. In respect to the council's letters to Mr Massey, Mr Wilson acknowledged receipt and promised to do his utmost in the interests of the Settler?. —Received. Pirongia Kawhia Road. —Mr H. O. Death wrjte requesting to know under whose jurisdiction the road existed. — Received. West Taupo County.—The secretary of the Kio Kio branch of the Farmers' Union wrote requesting the council to urge that the West Taupo County be made operative. He pointed out that the settlers in that county used the Waitomo County roads and paid no rates. —Referred to the clerk to make enquiries concerning the position. Level Crossings.—The Te Awamutu j Chamber of Commerce forwarded a recommendation concerning level crossings requesting "he council to affirm same. The resolution was carried as requested. Motor Car Registration. Mr F W. Whyte,Otorohanga,wrote with respect to registering a motor car. — Deferred till next meeting. Hauturu-Ofcorohanga Road. —Mr P. D. Hargresves wrote with respect to the bad places on the road requiring immediate attention. Received. The chairman reported with regard to the action brought against the council that the case had been settled satisfactorily. The chairman also reported with reference to the claim against the council threatened by Mr Snowdon that he had gone to the place where the boy received the injury by the detonator and was satisfied that the detonator had not been left by any of the council's workmen. The place had not been a council's camp and he was satisfied the council was in no way responsible for the accident. Miroahuiao-Matiere Road.—A tender for metalling on t'n3 road by Mr C. Cave at a price of £292 la was let, the prices being 4s 5d per yard for rubble and G* lid for limestone. Authority to raise a loan of £6OO to ouild a bridge in the Mangapu special rating area was passed by the council. Surfacemen.—Cr Johnston drew attention to the necessity for employing surfacemen. The roads in his district .were being seriously affected and there was ample work for the men.--.Cr Gregg said he would like to see a surfaceman on the Iluturu - Oiorohanga road for several months. —The chairman said recommendations were I embodied in the engineer's report con-
cerning the matter. —The engineer's report was adopted. Mangaotaki Road.—A number o£ tenders were received for the erection of limestone culverts but as they were all in excess of the engineer's estimate no tender was accepted. Ngapaenga Telephone.— Cr Were said the settlers in his district wanted a telephone, and he would like to get information concerning the method of getting a line erected under the Country Telephones Act.—The clerk said he would get all possible information concerning tne matter when in Wellington. Proposed New Loan. —Cr Were said the settlers were anxious to have the remainder of their road metalled. They wished to pick up the inetal from the boundary of the Mairoa special rating area. The settlers wouid apply for a subsidy. This routs would be the shortest to the coast, and it was desired to have the preliminaries set going The chairman suggested that they should make application for the subsidy, and they could afterwards apply for the loan, as in the event of the : subsidy being refused or delayed fresh ! arrangements regarding the nroposal j would require to be made. Accounts j to the amount of £2SO3 18s la were passed for payment. j
