QUESTIONS BY AUDITOR. At Monday evening's meeting of the Borough Counci a letter was received from the Controller and Auditor-Gene-ral with reference to the council's bal-ance-aheet asking for the authority relied upon in charging the whole of the engineer's salary against the £3137 loan, and in transferring £534 9s 4d from the £IBSO to the £3137 loan. Exception was also taken to the payment of £7 17s 6d to Mr E. H. Hardy as being in excess of the amount of £5 allowed by the Act. Attention was also drawn to the fact that a stone crusher, costing £lOl6 14s lid, had been paid out of the £IO,OIO loan for street construction, and stating that the Audit Office had no option but to take exception to the charge, as there was no provision made for it on the voting paper. The Audior-General said he would refrain from further action providing the council gave an assurance that when the work nas completed the plant would be sold and the proceed 3 refunded to the loan account.
