TERRIBLE COACH ACCIDENT.

DRIVER KILLED. PASSENGERS ESCAPE. A terrible experience befell the Rongotea coach, which left Palmerston North on Saturday afternoon. When a about a mile from Rongotea, and darkneP3 was becoming pronouced, the driver (Archibald Elliott) dismouted to light the lamps. He must have slipped when remounting the box or the horses started too soon, for fell near the horses, one of which lashed out crushing hia skull. The team then sped furiously on for about 200 yards and overturned the coach in an open drain, hurling out two passegers. The horses continued to plunge, with the result that two of them received mortal injuries. The pas-iengers were not badly hurt. The coach was smashed. The deceased was a single man. thirty-four years of age. He belonged to Timaru, and was part proprietor of the coaches.
