DISTRICT REQUIREMENTS.

PUBLIC WORKS EXPEDITED. Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, returned to Te Kaiti this morning after having spent some time in Wellington, attending to the various requirements of the district. Mr Wilson conferred on several occasions with the Minister for Pubic Works, and several matters of importance to the district were satisfactorily arranged. THE OHURA RAILWAY. With respect to the tunnel which is to be started forthwith on the Strat-ford-Okahukura railway and which it was estimated would take four years to complete, the member was informed by the Minister that in order to expedite matters the time for the completion of the contract had been reduced to three years. This in an indication that the Prime Minister is going to leave nothing undone towards fulfilling his pledge to have the line constructed to Mangaroa in four years. THE TANGITU ROAD. Work is to be continued on the Tangitu road as long as possible, and the tram is to be laid to the top of the dividing range. This will cover the worst portion of the road and serve to carry the settlers through the winter. The road will then be completed in as short a time as possible next season. TE KUm-MOKAU ROAD.

Mr Wilson said he had always htild the metalling of the main road to a width of only nine feet was a mistake in view of the enormous traffic.on the road. After going into the Matter fully with the Hon. Mr Fraser, the Minister decided to increase the width of metal to twelve feet in respect to the portion now being treated. The Minister said he had been impressed with the desirability of letting the road works in small contracts, and where assistance was required by small men in the way of horses and gear it would be provided by the Government under reasonable terms.
