STEAMERS' ROUGH VOYAGE.
THE MAKURA'S MAIL
PARTLY DESTROYED BY FIRE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PB.ESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, This Day.
The steamers Makura and Macedonia arrived from Sydney early this morning. Both were considerably delayed by a cyclone encountered during the early part of the voyage. The Macedonia was swept by two enormous deas enveloping the vessel to the foremast, breaking two steel cranes, and doing other damage. Most of the mail matter destroyed by fire in the Makura's mail room consisted of newspapers for all parts of New Zealand. Twenty bags were destroyed, others damaged by water were dried in the engine room. The contents will be sorted at Auckland and distributed later. It will be weekß, and in some caseß months, before senders of destroyed letters and papers can know the extent [of their loss.
