Without doubt ona of the most successful socials and dances ever held in the district took place on Friday evening of last week. It was given hy the "Kelly Boys"—Messrs Harvey, Pilkington, Fotheringham, Cook, Wilson and Moore. Visitors were present from Kawhia and Kinohaku, besides a large gathering from miles around the district. The "Kelly Boys" was the nom de plume adopted for the issue of the large invitation list, and it was a puzzle to many why or how that pseudonym originated. There were many guesses as to the reason, but in reality, it was the result of a pleasant Christmas holiday spent in the Queen City, where these boys after fun and frolic patronised a place fairly frequent, of a gentleman of that name. The time spent, not to say what else was,, was of such a considerable proportion as compared with that spent at any other place on the visit, that the boys came to the conclusion that on their return home they could either claim relationship or partnership. Such is the story, briefly, of the origination of the "Kelly Boys." The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion with nikau palms, and the combination of pretty dresses worn by the ladies gave the whole a charming ap pearancp. From start to finish the entertainment went with a swing and jollity that would be hard to surpass. The music was good, and the floor was all that could he desired, and, in fact, everything was carried out in a manner that was creditable. The hosts of the evening were untiring in their energies in attending to the wants of all. So enjoyable was the whole proceeding that the large gathering did not separate until almost six o'clock in the morning, and then it was with much reluctance. The supper, which was of recherche order was a feature of the evening, and Mesdames Willison, and Barlow, wno assisted the "Kelly Boys" are all to be congratulated for the excellence of the arrange ments. The wants of all at the supper were personally atended to by the "Kelly Boys." The supper room was also beautifully decorated with that well-known beautiful evergreen, the nikau, and here and there bunting lent charm and variety to the scene. During the evening several congratulatory speeches were made. Several songs and recitations were also contributed.
By one and all the evening was voted as the brightest and best of the many entertainments held in the district, and the "Kelly Boys" are deserving of the very highest praise for the success which attended their fUnc tion. The music of the evening was supplied by Mr VV. Higbam, and the duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr J. Kinnair.e, both of whom performed their parts i - a highly creditable manner.
