AWAKINO SCOUNTY.

The Editor. Sir, —With reference to the supposed forthcoming election of six councillors for the Awakino County I. would like to point out that if it even tuates it will be a useless burden on the taxpayer, inasmuch as if the Local Government Bill, which is almost certain to be put on the Statute Book next session is brought into force. It will mean that the County of Awakino will have had a .worthless expenditure in the cost of an election and preliminary expenses. It would, in my opinion, be much wiser for settlers not to force the position at present, and have a little patience to see what the proposed Local Government Bill will bring forth. At any rate, whatever may be the final result settlers should have an eye on the carrying out of the metalling schemes which are being carried out by the Waitomo County Council in the direction of the coast. The cost of an election and other incidental expenses would be more - wisely spent in the contribution of even that comparatively small amount in providing metal for the roads. Already Mr John Wouldes, a candidate for the Northern riding, is doing the county expounding his views regarding what should be done in the matter of roads and bridges frora an Awakino County point of view. Whilst congratulating Mr Wouldes on his public enterprise in going round addressing the ratepayers—it would be a good thing if more candidates for public honours wtfre imbued with the same spirit it would be better in my humble opinion, if he studied the broader and larger policy of roading the King Country generally thus extending and enlarging the community of interest of such a fine district. There is little doubt but that the men on the local bodies of the counties of Waitomo and Eawhia should be agreeable on their roading schemes for they have two outlets —the Kawhia harbour and the railway. That, sir, is. I consider a suffiicent reason why Awakino County should not be forced into an election until both theße counties have their houses in order and schemes agreed upon for the benefit of both and the large area of fertile country affected. —I am, etc., PROGRESS.
