MOEATOA-MANGAOHAE TELEPHONE.
The Editor. Sir,—l send you herewith, for publication, a copy of a letter just received by the Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce, in reference to the Moeatoa - Mangaohae telephone in, which letter is, perhaps, sufficient refutation of your Marokopa correspon-. dent's somewhat ungenerous remarks about the chamber in your last issue. I regret success has not yet been attained in this direction, but I hope, "with the assistance of your Marokopa correspondent and settlers," that We may yet attain the desired connection in the near future.—l am, 6tC " MOSTYN JONES, President Te Kuiti Chamber of Commerce. ' (Copy.) 4 Sir,—l have the honour, by direction, to refer to your letter of September 17th last, asking that a telephone line be erected between Moeatoa and Mangaohae; and to express regret that the work cannot be authorised meantime. The erection of the line would cost £315. The annual cost of working, including interest on the capital expenditure, is estimated at £29, and the revenue at £lO, leaving a deficiency of £l9. The construction of the line would be costly as the roads are bad and much, bush would require to be felled. The settlers at Moeatoa and places beyond have already facilities for communicating by telegraph. The department will be prepared to give the matter further consideration when access is better and settlement more advanced. A bond guaranteeing the payment of a subsidy of £9l 10s a year was not executed as the proposal to erect a section of line between Moeatoa and Mangaohae was abandoned.—F. V. WATERS, Assistant-Secretary.
